Set The Record Straight!

A few months ago I did an inspection for a nice young couple buying their first home in Columbus, Ohio. The wife, call her Jen, and her father-in-law and the agent arrived for the inspection. About half way through, the agent, in an attempt to include the father-in-law in the process, asked him how he would write up a particular discrepancy I found. The father-in-law acted very indignant and made the statement that he was only here to look after the interest of Jen. He berated me for not knowing how to write something, keep in mind that I never asked his opinion nor did I need it. He said all the agent and “her inspector” were interested in was the fee and selling a house.  About this time I turned to the father-in-law, and in spite of his attitude, I told him that I worked for Jen, not the agent and certainly not him and that if I needed or wanted his opinion I would ask for it.
Later that evening, Jen and her husband called me to apologize for the man’s attitude and rudeness.
Unfortunately, the young couple lost this house. Two weeks later, they called me to inspect another house in Reynoldsburg, Ohio that they had put under contract and eventually closed on. The father-in-law did not attend that inspection.
I strongly encourage my clients to attend the inspection, and if they are comfortable bringing others with them, that’s great. No inspector will discourage their attendance; however, jerks are not welcome.
